How to Find a Great Real Estate Agent: 4 Traits That Protect Your Investment

Finding the right real estate agent can feel overwhelming. A quick search will bring up hundreds of names, all promising to “fight for you” or “get top dollar.” But how do you really know if they’re the right fit? The truth is, not all real estate agents are created equal. Some run their business with full-time commitment, while others treat it as a side gig. Some prioritize transparency and relationships, while others focus on the paycheck.

After closing over 600 transactions personally and more than 3,000 as a team, I’ve seen the difference a great real estate agent can make. Here are the four traits I believe every great agent should have, with real-world examples to back it up.

1. Trustworthy – Transparency Over Scripts

Trust is the foundation of any client-agent relationship. A trustworthy agent doesn’t give you lines or rehearsed scripts when you ask about compensation, contracts, or the market. Instead, they educate you.

For example, our team doesn’t avoid the conversation about real estate compensation — we lean into it, and in fact, we often bring it up before clients even ask. We want to be open and honest so there aren’t lingering questions or moments of wondering what’s really going on. By addressing it upfront, we remove awkwardness and confusion and give our clients confidence from the beginning. We explain the history of commission structures, how buyer and listing agreements work, and what they mean for you financially. That way, you know exactly what you’re getting into before signing anything.

The same goes for the market. We tell clients the truth — the good, the bad, and the ugly. We bring hyper-local data, net sheets, and real-life examples from other buyers and sellers. It’s easier to move forward with confidence when you know what’s real, not just what sounds good.

2. Knowledge – Anticipating Problems Before They Arise

Experience matters in real estate. A knowledgeable agent has been through enough transactions to know where pitfalls and objections will pop up — and they help you avoid them before they ever become an issue.

Take this example: A seller wanted to price their home higher than $500,000. On the surface, that sounds fine, but I explained why crossing that benchmark would backfire. Their home was older, the kitchen was closed off, and the staircase was right at the front door — factors that buyers would immediately question. By pricing under $500K, we positioned the home more competitively and avoided months of frustration.

A great agent doesn’t just react. They anticipate. They understand contracts, contingencies, inspection reports, and buyer psychology. That’s how they protect your investment.

3. Work Ethic – Real Estate Is Not a Side Hustle

There’s a saying: Hard work beats talent when talent doesn’t work hard. A great real estate agent treats this as a business, not a hobby. They show up every day, keep office hours, and treat your goals like their top priority.

I’ll give you a story that proves the point. I once had a buyer terminate on one of my listings over a few very minor repair items. The problem wasn’t the house — it was the buyer’s agent. They admitted, “I don’t know what to do with this, so we’re terminating. I guess I did the best I could.”

That wasn’t the best they could do. It was a part-time agent with a full-time tech job who didn’t have the experience or work ethic to fight for their client. Weeks later, the buyer actually reached out to me directly, saying they wished their agent had done more. Unfortunately, the damage was done.

Work ethic matters. You want an agent who offers strategy sessions, has a marketing plan, negotiates effectively, communicates clearly, and shows up for inspections and debriefs. Anything less could cost you a home or a sale.

4. They Care – People Over Commissions

This one is simple but often overlooked. A great real estate agent genuinely cares about their clients as people, not just as transactions. In the industry, we call the opposite “commission breath” — when an agent chases the paycheck instead of doing what’s right.

Recently, we listed a home for a client who had just moved into an assisted living facility. Midway through the process, something devastating happened: they were locked out of their facility, placed in an isolated unit, and stripped of their comforts. The family quickly pulled them out and decided to bring them back home to readjust.

At that point, we pulled the home off the market immediately. To us, it wasn’t about losing a listing. It was about doing right by someone going through trauma. We even helped the family begin researching alternative assisted living facilities. That’s what caring looks like.

Our motto has always been: People over production. Always. When you prioritize people, everything else falls into place.

Who You Work With Matters

Choosing a real estate agent is one of the most important decisions you’ll make when buying or selling a home. Look for trustworthiness, knowledge, work ethic, and genuine care — and don’t settle for less. Your home is one of your biggest financial investments, and you deserve someone who will protect it like their own.
